Diamond from the ❤️

Not all diamonds are found underground.

Some shine in hospital hallways. In whispered prayers. In moments of quiet courage.

This poem was written by one of our Morahs-on-Wheels, who spends her days in hospital rooms and homes, out there in the trenches with the children and families we serve.

It's raw. It's real. And it's written straight from her heart to yours.

Let me take you on a journey
Hundreds of feet deep
Under layers of hard rock
Under cliffs so very steep.
In the bowels of the earth
Where thick darkness reigns
Where the air is thin and musty until
The energy within one drains.
Where dust and dirt established home
And shower trespassers in their abode
Blackening faces and clothes
Filling lungs with heavy load.
Yet it's right there in that miserable location
Deep dark underground
Where no human wants to step foot
That a most exquisite substance is found.
Unprecedented in its strength
A universe of uses unfurled
Enthralling in its beauty
Its sparkle lighting up your world.
Diamonds.

Let me take you on a journey
To a place that seems universes away
Far from the hubbub of daily life
From the miniscule stress of day to day.
In a world of sterile white
Where solemn silence reigns
Where the smell of antiseptic permeates
Till you feel you're losing your brains.
Where pain and tears established home
Showering trespassers without fail
Filling every crevice every corner
Till the very walls wail.
Yet it's right there in that miserable location
Its name with pain eternally bound
Where no human wants to step foot
That most precious deeds are found.
Caring beyond measure
Pure selflessness unfurled
The togetherness of a nation
Its sparkle lights up the world.
Diamonds.
